exciting year as a successful and respected golf shop and first year under
our new name. Originally founded in Reynoldsburg, Ohio as The Old Hickory
Golf Shop, we have been providing the best in professional club repair and
service as well as outstanding value in custom club making since we
started our business in 1985.
We’ve had a presence in the cyberspace golf club market since 1998 when we
began selling clubs on eBay®. While we are no longer active on eBay®, we
did have a mutually beneficial run in its auction format and sold hundreds
of clubs and sets to hundreds of very pleased eBay® buyers. You can still
read their positive remarks by visiting eBay’s® Feedback Forum under our
eBay® user name, Golfcity1.
When we moved back to Cincinnati in 2001, we decided to close The Old
Hickory Golf Shop as a traditional retail shop to concentrate solely on
the internet side of the business. We set up the ChrisHornGolf.com web
site and reached a measure of success by delivering high quality custom
made golf clubs at value prices to players all over the country. A large
number of these players had bought our clubs on eBay® and had become
repeat customers. In turn, they referred many of their golfing friends
and family to our site, many of whom became repeat buyers and referred
their golfing friends and family to our web site. You get the picture.
Word of mouth and referrals are a good way to help build a business.
However, word of mouth and referrals are not the only ways to build a
business and aren’t necessarily the most effective ways when it comes to
the internet. We decided to expand our web site by clarifying our products
and making our site more informative as well as becoming commercially
interactive, as follows:
• We made it a point to clearly present the properties and characteristics
of each club or set and how they relate to helping players improve their
games. We also evaluate the relative playability of irons and how each
model may benefit one golf handicap group more so than another. We also
make it immediately clear, as soon as you click on a particular club or
set, how much it will cost, including delivery and all of the available
options. You shouldn’t have to go to ‘add to cart’ to find out how much it
will cost to have a club delivered to you, which is what we saw on a
number of golf club web sites we visited.
• We made sure our new, improved web site goes into considerable detail on
current clubmaking and technology trends to help keep our players who
visit our web site informed along these lines. These topics are found in
the Golf Club Fitting and Game Improvement sections as well as some timely
questions that we decided to include in our Q & A section.
• We built our web site on the platform of the Microsoft® Commerce
Manager® software package. This provides the means for customers to
clearly and effectively select their new club(s) as well as their club
specifications and any options and/or upgrades they may want to add to
their order. This information is gathered by the software for processing
by Golf Clubs Ltd. In addition to automating the ordering process so that
it’s commercially interactive, Microsoft® Commerce Manager® also provides
us with the capability to keep customer credit card and personal
information secure and safely maintained.
Our goal at Golf Clubs Ltd has not changed since we started our business
as The Old Hickory Golf Shop in 1985. We aim to deliver high quality,
custom fitted golf clubs to players at a value price. Our clubs are made
with the same materials and to the same specifications as those sold by the
pro line companies. The main difference is that our clubs cost up to 70%
less than the pro line clubs and our clubs are custom made to fit the
player and his or her game. We simply want to provide all players who
visits our web site with golf clubs that will help them to play
successful, progressive and, most importantly, enjoyable golf and not have
to spend a fortune to do so.
